Hun Sen says ASEAN instrument for workers a priority for 2012
Prime Minister Hun Sen said Tuesday that establishing a regional instrument to protect migrant workers in Southeast Asia should be a priority for ASEAN this year. “The free flow of skilled workers is a key condition for the ASEAN Economic Community,” he said in an opening address to a two-day summit of ASEAN leaders in Phnom Penh. “Even though this goal has not been achieved completely, the exchange of workers among ASEAN countries is actively taking place. In this context, there is a need to enhance cooperation among ASEAN countries to protect migrant workers. “ASEAN has started to do this work already but has not reached any particular agreement. Thus, we have to include it as a priority in our agenda to establish an actual instrument in 2012 for implementation.” …
